George Washington's Mount Vernon
George Washington's Mount Vernon overlooks the Potomac River 15 miles south of Washington, D.C., and remains the most-visited historic home in America. Tour the restored 18th-century mansion, 50 acres of gardens, and Washington's tomb, then meet costumed interpreters and watch trade demonstrations across the working farm. Two miles on, the fully functioning water-powered gristmill and reconstructed whiskey distillery run April through October. Plan about three hours to take in the grounds, riverfront views, and living history.
