The Cross in the Woods is a Catholic national shrine in Indian River, Michigan, centered on a towering 55-foot redwood cross bearing a seven-ton bronze figure of Christ — 28 feet tall — sculpted by Michigan artist Marshall Fredericks and cast in Norway. Raised in 1959 and designated a national shrine in 2006, it draws roughly 300,000 visitors a year. Peaceful wooded grounds hold smaller shrines, devotional gardens, and an unusual museum of nun dolls dressed in habits from around the world.
