Beaumont sits on I-10 in Southeast Texas, about 90 minutes east of Houston, where the Piney Woods meet the Gulf coastal marsh. The 1901 Spindletop gusher made it a boomtown, a story retold at the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum on Lamar University's campus. So close to Louisiana, its kitchens blend Cajun, Creole, and Tex-Mex — crawfish boils to barbecue. Outdoors, the Big Thicket National Preserve protects nine ecosystems, and Cattail Marsh's 900-acre wetland boardwalk draws birders tracking 250-plus species.
